A desulfurization tower is a large-scale desulfurization device used for flue gas desulfurization. On the other hand, the desulfurization and dust removal device used for small-scale coal-fired industrial boilers and kilns is known as a desulfurization dust collector. The flue gas containing SO2 needs to be chemically absorbed in both the desulfurization tower and desulfurization dust collector to increase the absorption process and improve the desulfurization efficiency while reducing investment and operating costs.

The basic requirements for a desulfurization tower and desulfurization dust collector include the following: there should be a large contact area and certain contact time between the gas and liquid. Moreover, the disturbance between the gas and liquid should be strong, and the absorption efficiency of SO2 should be high with minimum resistance. Additionally, the equipment should have stable operations with appropriate operating flexibility and minimum pressure drop during airflow. Furthermore, the structure should be simple, easy to manufacture and maintain, have low cost, and a long service life. The equipment should also be scaling and clogging free, have wear resistance, corrosion resistance, low energy consumption, and no secondary pollution.

The SO2 absorption and purification process deals with low-concentration SO2 flue gas with considerable flue gas volume that requires continuous and efficient purification. The chemical reaction in which SO2 participates should be extremely fast. The in-membrane conversion coefficient value should be large, and the reaction should occur in the membrane. Therefore, an absorption tower with a gas phase as a continuous phase, a high degree of turbulence, and a large phase interface should be used. Commonly, spray towers, packed towers, spray towers, plate towers, Venturi absorption towers, etc. meet these requirements. Among them, the spray tower is suitable for low-sulfur flue gas treatment used in both large power plants and small and medium-sized industrial facilities. For high-sulfur flue gas treatment, the non-ferrous industry mainly uses pneumatic emulsification desulfurization towers and multi-layer spray towers.
